Like in most parts of the world, you have to
follow driving rules in the Emirates. Not doing so can cost you serious fines
and severe safety issues. It is crucial to know and understand the driving rules
very well before you get your license. You can get a cheap car
rental in Dubai after that.
Driving rules
1. All vehicles in the Emirates are on the right-hand side of the road and pass on the left side. Drivers from the US and most European countries will have no problem with this at all. Those from the UK, Australia, and other countries will need some time to adjust. They drive on the left-hand side and pass on the right.
2. All kids aged from 4 to 8 years old should be in a booster seat when riding any car in Dubai. A child younger than 13 years of age should never sit in the passenger seat. You can let your car provider know so they can make arrangements or adjustments.
3. Wearing seatbelts is a must like in most parts of the world.
4. Drivers are not allowed to use phones when driving unless through a hands-free set.
5. All cars must have insurance and proper registration papers. If you are renting a car in Dubai, make sure the rental company gives you all needed paperwork.
6. Never drive after drinking liquor. Not even after one can or bottle of beer. Make sure your blood alcohol content is zero. You can end up getting fined with US$5,000 or thrown in jail. Even worse, you can end up deported.
7. There are usually signs with the speed limits on the road. Make sure you check them out and follow.
Dubai has serious fines for those who do not abide road rules. Make sure you respect them if you do not want to get into any trouble.
Driving license requirements
1. A driver should be at least 18 years old. But if you want to rent a car, you should be 21 years or older.
2. Those from one of the Gulf Cooperation Council
Countries do not need an International Driving License. Even those from a
European country. As long as you are on a Tourist Visa, you can use your
driving license.
3. If you are on a Tourist Visa and from other countries, you can get an International Driving Permit. You can get that from your home country before going to Dubai.
4. If you do not have a Tourist Visa, get a UAE driving license instead.
